Summary

Determined to make her heroine "as poor and plain as myself," Charlotte Brontë made a daring choice for her 1847 novel。 Jane Eyre possesses neither the great beauty nor entrancing charm that her fictional predecessors used to make their way in the world。 Instead, Jane relies upon her powers of diligence and perception, conducting herself with dignity animated by passion。
The instant and lasting success of Jane Eyre proved Brontë's instincts correct。 Readers of her era and ever after have taken the impoverished orphan girl into their hearts, following her from the custody of cruel relatives to a dangerously oppressive boarding school and onward through a troubled career as a governess。 Jane's first assignment at Thorn field, where the proud and cynical master of the house harbors a scandalous secret, draws readers ever deeper into a compelling exploration of the mysteries of the human heart。
A banquet of food for thought, this many-faceted tale invites a splendid variety of interpretations。 The heroine's insistence upon emotional equality with her lover suggests a feminist viewpoint, while her solitary status invokes a consideration of the problems of growing up as a social outsider。 Some regard Jane's attempts to reconcile her need for love with her search for moral rectitude as the story's primary message, and lovers of gothic romance find the tale's social and religious aspects secondary to its gripping elements of mystery and horror。 This classic of English literature truly features something for every reader。

If you want to read a story about a strong, female protagonist, this book's for you。I was forced to read Jane Eyre in high school and ended up absolutely loving it。 This is such a well done book on such a fantastic view on feminism, especially during the English Victorian era。SPOILERSI thought the book was a beautiful yet not forced view on the way feminism was viewed during those years, and can even be compared to woman representation today。 Jane Eyre is an independent women, or at least tries If you want to read a story about a strong, female protagonist, this book's for you。I was forced to read Jane Eyre in high school and ended up absolutely loving it。 This is such a well done book on such a fantastic view on feminism, especially during the English Victorian era。SPOILERSI thought the book was a beautiful yet not forced view on the way feminism was viewed during those years, and can even be compared to woman representation today。 Jane Eyre is an independent women, or at least tries to be, but this, I at least thought, was not necessarily forced。 So many books, movies, TV shows, etc。 try to relate to women by writing and creating this unnecessarily strong and independent women who are essentially "better than men"; they strip them of all of their femininity and "girly-ness" in order to make them stronger and independent (when in reality, all they're doing is making them more "manly")。 Women can be strong and independent and go against the way a "strong" woman is usually represented in today's media。Another thing I hate that is portrayed as a "strong woman" is, basically, their hatred towards men。 While a small part of feminism is being independent, consistently belittling men them is not necessarily a great use of woman representation。 Of course some women rely on men and some do not, but constantly ridiculing men and calling it "feminism" is not feminism。 Realistically understanding that there are things that a woman can and cannot do that men can and cannot do is a more mature and reasonable approach to feminism than simply having a "I'm better than men" mindset。 Feminism is both a woman and man supported idea, so trying to scorn, rather than critic, a man's ideas of your version of feminism is more immature than right。And with that, I believe Jane Eyre was a great representation of women and what women want, especially during this era。 Throughout the novel, we see Jane mature and progress from a girl to a woman。 But even as a child, all she wants in life is to be free。 Free。 Independent from all。As a child, Jane seeks independence from her abusive aunt and cousins。 As a teenager, Jane still seeks independence as she feels trapped at school。 As she nears adulthood (especially when she's with the Rivers), Jane's flame of independence doesn't darken, but rather grows more intense。 Having her own voice and expressing her own thoughts places Jane as a symbol of feminism。 Instances where she thinks of others rather than herself (or of a man) also reestablishes that idea of feminism in Jane。The only problem I truly have with Jane Eyre is Rochester。 Rochester destroys all of the progression made by Jane and brings her down to the same level as many other women, one who's sole focus is on a man。 While there's nothing wrong with centering a man in your life, it's painful in this scenario as Jane's main focus in life was independence。 Being with a man during this time resulted in losing your independence。 It's almost as if the entire premise of the book, the buildup of self-worth and feminism and women empowerment, was immediately lost once Jane began to fall for Rochester。Now is Jane finding love a bad thing? Of course not! But Rochester?! Rochester is a terrible man, or excuse me, a terrible married man。 He lies to Jane and constantly puts her in danger。 If Jane were to end with a man who wouldn't put her in any type of danger, I would find it more bearable than Rochester。 I wished Jane were a reasonable person when it came to Rochester, but she stupidly looks past all of his personal flaws and still falls for him。I personally feel that the end of the book was such a disappointment。 However, I can't 100% hate on it since it was a more common idea and practice during this era。 Point of the story, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and it's take on feminism, but it severely lacked this idea and purpose once Rochester was introduced。 I also disliked Rochester's character overall, and felt that Jane should've kept higher standards lmao。 。。。more

I really wanted to like this。 I just got to the part where Jane and Mr。 Rochester have a sit down for probably their first proper conversation and it was SO long-winded and boring。 I even took a break and went and finished 3 other fantastic books that were a whole lot interesting and spookier than this one (The Silent Companions, The Cemetery of Forgotten Books 3-4)。 After that, it was even harder to get back to this and take a few more pages of Rochester droning on and on。 Maybe it is the editi I really wanted to like this。 I just got to the part where Jane and Mr。 Rochester have a sit down for probably their first proper conversation and it was SO long-winded and boring。 I even took a break and went and finished 3 other fantastic books that were a whole lot interesting and spookier than this one (The Silent Companions, The Cemetery of Forgotten Books 3-4)。 After that, it was even harder to get back to this and take a few more pages of Rochester droning on and on。 Maybe it is the edition I am reading? I enjoyed the time I spent reading this, though it took me quite long to finish, as it is a slow paste read。 The autobiographical style was transfixing and throughout the book, I longed to find out what would become of the beloved main characters。 As a non-native speaker, it was hard to understand some of the vocabularies, but the context made it easy to follow the plot。

1 star。 you know it’s bad when even the arson scenes are dull。 i love the idea of this book so much。 it revolutionized literature and gave a voice to women in the field。 but good god was it so clearly written centuries ago。 the plot is dull, characters infuriating, and ending unsatisfactory。 maybe i would have enjoyed this more if i wasn’t reading it for english class, maybe not。 all i know is that jane eyre doesn’t do it for me。

La pluma de Charlotte maravillosa。 Jane es un personaje extraordinario。Saint John es lo único que quitaría de la ecuación。

Eloquently written, and an exceptionally well developed character in Jane。 However, in contrast, some of the periphery characters were rather one dimensional。 The middle section of the narrative at Thornfield was by far the high point of the novel, with other portions dragging slightly。 3。5/4 overall。

Jess

Slow start and many lulls throughout the novel but definitely areas of the plot that were interesting and kept readers engaged。 Not at all what I anticipated from a classic but sends readers on an interesting journey of a young woman that you don’t often experience。 Wasn’t a fan of how the ending came about but was content with a makeshift happy ending。

I like Jane, and I like the general gothic creepiness of the story, and how it explores the hardships of the life of a governess。 I did not care for Mr。 Rochester AT ALL, so it really didn't work for me as a romance, though。 I like Jane, and I like the general gothic creepiness of the story, and how it explores the hardships of the life of a governess。 I did not care for Mr。 Rochester AT ALL, so it really didn't work for me as a romance, though。 。。。more
